USB-C now a prominent feature in computers, cars.

The technology world has adopted a new connector standard called USB Type C (USB-C) offering many advantages over its predecessor commonly known as USB Type A (USB-A).  These advantages include faster data transfer speeds, faster charging capability and a smaller physical size.

Unlike the older rectangular USB-A port you are likely to be familiar with, the new USB-C connector is reversible, so you don’t have to fumble around flipping the cable over anymore while trying to plug it in to the port.  This makes it simpler to use, since you can’t plug it in the wrong way.  USB-C ports are also smaller and have a more curvy profile making it easier to fit into today’s thinner devices.  In fact, several manufacturers are replacing USB-A ports altogether and only including USB-C ports in their new equipment.  One example of this is Apple, who uses USB-C ports exclusively on their MacBook products and the new Mac Mini.

Auto makers now include USB-C on many new cars
Car manufacturers such as Nissan and BMW are also on board.  Many new vehicles include USB-C ports in front and rear passenger seating areas allowing you to charge mobile phones, tablets and even laptops using the new technology.  Some USB-C ports are even capable of fast-charging your devices thanks to the increased power-handling capabilities now up to 100 Watts (from the 2.5 Watts available in USB-A).

For backwards-compatibility you can use rather bulky adapters to convert USB-A to USB-C and vice-versa, but this is not always practical or ideal – it is always best to connect devices directly without the use of such adapters.
